Engineering Technology

Every country has its own Technology Development Team in various disciplines, consisting on following members:

  • Scientist           -  Four years Bachelor of Science Degree at least.

  • Engineer           -  Four years Bachelor of Engineering Degree at least.

  • Technologist     -  Four years Bachelor of Technology Degree at least.

  • Technician         -  Three years Diploma of Engineering or Technology at least.

  • Skilled Worker   - Two or One year Certificate of Engineering or Technology at least.

Each member has its own defined role and responsibilities.  Scientist, Engineer and Engineering Technologist are in leading position.  Technician and Skilled Worker assist the Scientist, Engineer and Engineering Technologist.

Engineer and Engineering Technology are separate but closely related professional areas.  Of course, there is much overlap between these two fields of Engineering and Engineering Technology.  Engineering programs often focus on theory and conceptual design, while Engineering Technology programs usually focus on application and implementation.

Graduates of four-year Engineering programs (B.E or B.Sc Engineering or B.S Engineering etc.) are called Engineers. They often pursue entry-level work involving conceptual design or research and development.

Graduates of four-year Engineering Technology programs (B.Tech or B.S Technology or B.Sc Engineering Technology etc.) are called Engineering Technologists.  These professionals are most likely to enter positions in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, product design, testing, or technical services and sales.

All the Engineering Councils of the developed Nations like Australia, New Zealand, UK, India, Srilanka, South Africa and USA etc. accept both the Engineering and Engineering Technology Graduates as full professional on equal status.  They simply know their importance in the development of Technology for their Nations.  We strongly encourage you to visit the website of “International Engineering Alliance (IEA)” i.e. www.ieagreements.org for any further related information.

As per decision of Higher Education Commission (HEC) taken in erstwhile UGC’s 39th meeting, four years B.Tech Hons Degree is compatible and at par with four years B.E / B.Sc Engineering Degree.

Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) is a professional council of B.E / B.Sc Engineering Graduates regulating the Engineering profession.  Whereas, National Technology Council (NTC) is for B.Tech-Hons / B.Sc Engineering Technology Graduates establishment under Higher Education Commission (HEC) to regulate the Engineering Technology profession.

Pakistan also needs to realize the importance of its B.Tech / B.Sc Engineering Technology Graduates i.e. Engineering Technologists on the same lines as rest of the world by giving equal opportunities and rights.  Without Engineering Technologist, it would be very hard to develop its own Technology not only for itself but also for other friend countries.

Pakistan is still missing the Engineering Technologist in its Technology Team with their due rights and professional status due to ill-intention advice by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) to the Govt. of Pakistan against B.Tech Hons / B.Sc Engineering Technology Degrees Graduates.
